General

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played on a court smaller than a tennis court, using a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, in singles (1 vs. 1) or doubles (2 vs. 2). Its simple rules make it easy to learn and highly social.

At what age can you start playing?

Pickleball is suitable for all ages. Children can start learning the game as early as 6 or 7, and the sport can be enjoyed well into older age thanks to its relatively low impact on the joints. It’s a great way for the whole family to stay active, regardless of age.

Do I need to be fit or experienced to start?

Not at all. Pickleball is accessible to all fitness and experience levels. You can play casually for fun or competitively—the pace can be adapted to each player.

Is pickleball good for your health?

Yes. Pickleball can help improve cardiovascular endurance, agility, balance, coordination and reflexes while being relatively easy on the joints. It also offers social and mental benefits thanks to its fun and social nature.

Choosing Your Paddle

How do I choose the right pickleball paddle?

Four key factors to consider are core thickness, weight, shape and surface. A 13 mm core generally provides more power, while a 16 mm core offers more control. Lighter paddles are easier to maneuver, while heavier paddles provide more power and stability. Standard shapes offer a balanced feel, elongated paddles provide greater reach, and widebody paddles offer a more forgiving hitting area. Carbon fiber surfaces are popular for spin and control. For beginners, a 16 mm, medium-weight, standard-shape paddle is an excellent choice.

What is the difference between a honeycomb-core paddle and a foam-core paddle?

A paddle with a honeycomb core generally offers a good balance of power, control and durability, while a foam core provides greater vibration absorption and a softer feel at impact. The best choice depends on your playing style and the feel you prefer.

13 mm or 16 mm: Which thickness should I choose?

A 13 mm core generally provides more power, while a 16 mm core offers more control and a more forgiving sweet spot. Beginners and players who prioritize control generally prefer 16 mm paddles.

Is a lighter or heavier paddle better?

A lighter paddle is easier to maneuver and quicker at the net, while a heavier paddle provides more power and stability. A medium-weight paddle offers a good balance for most players.

Paddle Care & Maintenance

How should I take care of my pickleball paddle?

Wipe the surface after each game with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid extreme temperatures—don’t leave your paddle in a car in direct sunlight or extreme cold. Store it in a protective case and replace the overgrip when it becomes worn. Proper care helps extend the life of your paddle and maintain its performance.

How do I clean a raw carbon fiber surface?

To clean your raw carbon paddle, use a rubber eraser designed for pickleball paddle surfaces.

Gently move the eraser from top to bottom across the entire paddle surface, using light and even pressure. This helps remove ball residue and dirt that can build up on the surface while helping preserve its grip and spin potential.

Tip: Avoid scrubbing from side to side or using circular motions. A vertical, top-to-bottom motion is recommended for effectively cleaning a raw carbon surface.

Should I use a protective paddle case?

Yes, it is highly recommended. A case protects the paddle surface from scratches, impacts and temperature changes during transport and storage.

When should I replace my paddle?

Replace your paddle if you notice cracks, delamination, dead spots or a heavily worn surface that no longer generates the same level of spin. With regular use, a quality paddle can last for several seasons.

Playing & Basic Rules

What do I need to start playing pickleball?

You need a paddle, appropriate pickleballs for indoor or outdoor play, athletic shoes with good traction and, ideally, protective eyewear. Our beginner sets include the essentials to help you get started quickly.

What are the basic rules of pickleball?

The serve is made diagonally and underhand. The two-bounce rule requires the ball to bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. A non-volley zone, commonly called the kitchen, extends from the net. Games are generally played to 11 points, with a 2-point margin required to win.

Where can I play pickleball?

You can play at community centers, gyms, clubs, dedicated outdoor courts and even at home with a portable net. More and more municipalities are adding dedicated pickleball courts.

Can I play indoors and outdoors?

Yes, pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors. Simply use the appropriate ball and footwear for the playing surface.

Which pickleball should I use indoors or outdoors?

Indoor pickleballs typically have 26 holes, while outdoor pickleballs typically have 40 holes. Choose the ball based on where you play most often.

Should I wear protective eyewear?

It is strongly recommended. Pickleballs and paddles can reach significant speeds, so lightweight protective eyewear can help protect your eyes without interfering with your vision during play.

What shoes should I wear?

Choose pickleball or court shoes with good traction and lateral support for quick side-to-side movements. Avoid running shoes, which are primarily designed for forward movement.
